Man achieves its first landing on comet

Reported from foreign media, European Space Agency (ESA) confirmed the news that the lander, Philae has successfully landed on the surface of a Jupiter comet shorten as 67P, setting a new milestone in the history of man’s exploration into the space. This is the first successful landing on comet in history, which has much significance in the research and exploration of comets.

The Philae lander is reported has flown in its probe Rosetta for over 10 years, covering up to 6.5 billion miles just to make this successful landing. Launched in March of 2004, Rosetta searched for 10 years before it finally caught the 67P comet which is coming towards the sun in the space 0.4 billion miles away from the earth in August of 2014.

Rosetta released Philae in 9:35 on 12th, European central time. Philae, weighting 100 kilos with 10 equipped scientific instruments, with the size of a refrigerator, approached the comet with a walking speed of 3.5 miles per hour, which takes nearly 7 hours to finally land on the core of the comet. As the small gravitation of comet, the landing of Philae needs bolts to fix its position.

This project involves the research and efforts of over 2000 employees and companies or factories from 14 different countries for nearly 20 years, with investments of up to 1.4 billion euros from European countries.

Astronomers believe that comet, consisting of matters of initial solar system, is likely to maintain its elements intact due to its low temperature and the frozen surroundings. Research of comets would help reveal the many mysteries concerning the forming of solar system. Scientists hope that this landing would help understand comets formed in the initial period of solar system and further explores the origin of solar system or even of human being.
